It might get bloody some egos are sure going to get bruised over it but it going to be entertaining to watch. And we will be able to fully say that Ubuntu is no one derivative! Since a lot of Linux distro are Ubuntu derivative we have yet to really appreciate the full impact of this move! It may well be big enough to be compared with Apple OsX transition. type='text'>Why Linux is perfect for your school!

September is one day away the kids have or are about to start school again... So it time to talk about what Linux can do for your school! Why should Linux be used to introduce peoples to the world of computing.

1. Windows is too easy for school! That a bold statement but it true! You put a Windows Pre-loaded computer in front of a kid he/she will never learn how computer work! Linux learning curve is an amazing teaching tool!

2. To use Linux a student will need to learn how to get a Distro, burn it on CD or USB key, Boot the live cd, partition drives. Install the OS, Drivers and Codecs management. It a two hours lesson that will teach a student how to really use hardware!

More to follow

Am back bitches!

I got a good crowd following me on twitter so I feel it time am reviving my blogs!

Watch What You Say... Online

My job is to collect data online and that made me a little paranoid. So here my tricks to protect your online privacy. All those online networking sites ask for your names but it not an obligation to give them YOUR REAL NAME AND ADDRESS! Webmail you shall use all the time and when you create an email account don't give your real names and address too! Just these two precaution will throw a wrench on any amateur trying to find dirt on you just by googling your name.

They will have to link you to your online nick and that could be hard this is how to make this even more harder! Only a fool register a printer warranty only an even bigger fool buy a printer or any hardware with a credit or debit card! Most printer leave trace on every page they print so forget shredding if you do something shady don't even own a printer!

They could get data from your ISP so to add another layer of security you could choose to never log on the net if it was not behind at least one TOR proxy node. They could seize your computer but you do a fresh Ubuntu install and formated everything 2 times a years and that happen to be now if you have warning that the government is coming for you format! Format! And format if it good enough for Cheney it good enough for you! Somebody even more paranoid will always boot off a USB stick or even better an SD card if the crap hit the fan a USB stick can easily be destroyed in 2 minutes and an SD card can be snap in 10 seconds you can even mail to yourself an SD card in a regular mail envelope!

Only an idiot would be doing something shady using a Microsoft or Apple product! I guarantee the government has back door access to any computer that is running a closed source OS! You want privacy go Linux! You should never enable automatic login and it always smart to have a log off shortcut on your desktop! Hell I known a few peoples who have a format everything shortcut on their own desktop! Setup a strong password, never print it and when your not using your computer log off. They can seize your computer they cannot seize your brain you have the right to remain silent! SO DO SO STUPID! You got nothing to tell anybody and if arrested the only thing you ask is for a Lawyer nothing else!

A side note on Linux and the open source you know you can easily find way to encrypt folders and files with encryption keys that would give the NSA a run for their money! A lot of what I just wrote can and is being used by Iranians right now to survive and still communicate with the outside world!

The best defense is a strong offense if anybody ever sue me the first thing am doing is research everybody involve from the Judge, the prosecutor, court clerk, Jury members, witness and expert witness. I doubt that you can find dirt on me online because I live a pretty boring life anyway. Add-ons!
Firefox is famous for it Add-ons and until recently I personally use DownloadHelper to grab video off YouTube. While DH is still very useful for other site the new king of YouTube grabber is the Easy Youtube Video Downloader! Basicly that add-ons embed three links below the video description to let you download the video in 3GP, MP4 and HD qualities.
And since this is a Linux Ubuntu blog let me give you a small avidemux trick involving two or more video from YouTube. Alright you come across a YouTube channel where a long video is cut in parts to fit the 10 minutes rule on regular account. You like to watch and have that video in one file what are you going to do? Use the EYVD to grab them and avidemux to join them off course. To make it easier download all parts in order to an empty folder EYVD will name the first video "video.mp4" and the second video "video2.mp4" and so one. Once you got all parts let start using avidemux to join them.

First start avidemux if you don't have that program it in the ubuntu repo so all you need to do is add it with the add/remove applications or with synaptic. I highly reccomend it for small video editing job it pretty simple and easy to use. If you already have avidemux skip that part.

Just type avidemux in the search box and it the first result bellow click on them to add them once that done click on Apply and let synaptic do the rest. Once installed you will find avidemux on the sounds and video menu of the applications bar.
Now that you have avidemux and started it you should open the first video when that loaded click on the last frame button.

Append the second part. Append is going to load the second video at the cursor this is why you need to click the last frame button every time after you load a new part.

Once you got all the parts loaded just change the format to mp4.

Leave both video and audio on copy than save video as and your done. The fun part avidemux will join all the files in 20 seconds to a minute max. This is that fast especially on my old workhorse. A word of caution this is only for videos that have been split if you got video from different source you might hell you will need to do some cropping.

Ubuntu tutorial of the day lit files!

lit file are a pain in the ass even in windows! In windows I use to convert them to pdf using the ABC Amber text converter. This is pretty much how to install and use clit a lit converter for Linux.

Download both .deb files from the address bellow to your desktop.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=159331&page=2

.deb file are the same thing as a windows installer so you just click on them to start the installation and Ubuntu will take care of the rest.
In this case you should install them in this order

1. libtommath0_0.39-3_i386.deb

2. clit_1.8-1_i386.deb

Now that you have clit and it library installed let use it to extract data from a lit file
first create a new folder on your desktop call it Book or whatever else you want to call it than copy and paste the lit file you want to convert on your desktop if you did not already.

Now chance are your lit file might have a space in it filename you need to remove it. Command line program don't like file name with space in file name. So the file "this book suck.lit" need to be renamed to "this_book_suck.lit" or "this-book-suck.lit"

open a terminal than type.
clit
add a space after clit than drag and drop your lit file to the terminal you should get something like this.
$ clit '/home/username/Desktop/this_book_suck.lit'
add a space than drag and drop the book folder i told you to create in the terminal.
That should give you something like this.
$ clit '/home/username/Desktop/this_book_suck.lit' '/home/username/Desktop/book'
Press enter and watch in amazement as everything in that lit file is being extracted to the book folder.

You will get a few files one of them is an html file that contain the text you could just open it with Firefox than print to file to get a pdf out of that html file or you could copy and paste the text to OpenOffice to create a pdf with the picture of the book cover on page one.

The challenge is issued

I can't believe peoples still claiming to find Linux confusing least of all Ubuntu! Every questions, problem and troubleshooting I ever had to resolve in the past two years of using just Ubuntu I found an answer with one or two Google search in a few minutes.

I still consider myself a Linux noob yet am using it every day and I can count on my right hand the numbers of problems I had in the past year! Can you say that about XP? Are you that lazy that you cannot use google when something not working? You do not have any excuse anymore to try Linux seriously at least Ubuntu! And don't tell me you gave up after 20 minutes because you found that the Gnome or KDE desktop was too confusing you wasted hours of your life running bloatware from Microsoft at least give Ubuntu a week!
In that spirit am starting the Ubuntu one week challenge purge your system of Microsoft for a week!

Update: Lets put my own ass on the line the first person who ask me I would mentor for a week and I will get you up and running with all the basic stuff you might need to know!
