Anybody who a bit of a Linux tinkerer heard by now of the Raspberry Pi. The project aim to build a really small but powerful and cheap ARM computer. How small? Well you got USB stick that are bigger. How cheap? About 35$! When you ask? It shipping at the end of this month. The question now that most Linux tinkerers are asking is how many can I buy and what would be my first project? The first run will be 10000 and order are limited to one per person. So while you may be tempted to buy 10 just for the hell of it you either have to wait or figure a way around the limit of one per person.
But what to do with your new Pi?
That what I will attempt to answer by coming up with a top 10 list that won't include the obvious like file servers, media servers.
Idea number one: Door chime with video messaging!
You add to the Pi ($35) a small webcam ($17.44), a USB numeric keyboard ($9.71) a USB hub ($6.53) and a wi-fi dongle ($4.83) With a bit of scripting peoples who ring the bell will also be welcome to a message from you telling them that you're not home and to leave a message after the beep. Off course any message left will be sent via email to whatever email service you choose to use for you to retrieve later. You could even upload all video automatically to a private youtube account! It also a peephole, a security camera... The applications are endless and you can build it for under 80 bucks. I bet if you been tinkering with electronic for a while you got most if not all the extra parts needed already.
I update with more project in a few days.
